My Favorite Fall Decorating Tips (with simplicity in mind)

I successfully set up our fall decor last week. As I was putting up my pumpkins and trinkets, I reflected a little on how my mindset around seasonal decorating has shifted over the years. I love decorating for the -ber month holidays. But I don’t love extra stress, closets stuffed with things I don’t use most of the year, or spaces that feel too cluttered or unintentional.

Over the past few years, I’ve explored concepts of minimalism and simplicity. Here are a few decorating ideas I’ve slowly embraced and appreciated with their influence.

  • So often, less is more. All my fall decor needs to fit in one tote that can be stored easily in the closet. I don’t have too much storage space, so it’s important to me that I keep my seasonal decor items simplified enough that storing them doesn’t become an unnecessary stress. Less decor also just leads to a less cluttered vibe around the home in general. The big thing to remember though: Be mindful about what you bring in each year. If not to save money, at least to save space & avoid waste.

  • Reuse > Trends. Especially when it comes to these holiday months, it feels so cozy to lean into the nostalgia of the days ahead. Pulling out decor items that have sat on your shelf year after year, often carry along memories from seasons past. And as a mom, I’ve noticed these are the items my kids delight in the most.

  • Decor doesn’t need to be knick knacks. Some of my favorite autumn items aren’t the random items I’ve stumbled upon in HomeGoods or Target. Actually, one is a cute print I found on Etsy. Another is a pumpkin pillow that even the kids gets excited to see when it’s time to usher in Autumn. My husband brought home some maple syrup in maple leaf jars and I am already envisioning little flowers or greenery in them. And finally, one item that my kids fight over every year is the “Fall Blanket” (as we call it) that I made years ago with scrap yarn (pattern found at Mama In a Stitch).

  • Real pumpkins are the real winners. I love real pumpkins for three reasons: 1. I don’t have to store them. 2. They decompose so they can hop right into the compost instead of adding to plastic waste. 3. They just look lovely.

I hope this inspires you a little to embrace a touch of simplicity and nostalgia, and maybe even a little creativity, in your home as we embark on the “‘Ber Months” ahead. Enjoy!
